Another building constructed of sandstone is this one on the corner of Pearl and Houston Streets. In a map from 1898 it shows the building was a bank. Sandstone, which was plentiful in the area, was a sturdy economical material for construction. The back of the building, which is constructed of wood, was added later. In early days, the building on this site was made of wood and was The Blackhawk Saloon. This was another place where John St. Helen, aka John Wilks Booth, served libations.
